Preface
This Code has been prepared to provide an engineering basis for design in wood and principal wood products and fastenings. It includes engineering assumptions and formulas unique to these materials, data on the assignment of allowable working stresses, and the applicable design methods. Much of this information was previously dispersed in technical periodicals and individual standards and is now consolidated here.
When applied to buildings, CSA Code 086 is intended to be used in conjunction with the National Building Code of Canada. A liaison committee with the Structural Advisory Group to the Associate Committee on the National Building Code has reviewed the contents of this Code in order to avoid technical differences.
Individual sections were written by qualified specialists acting for special subcommittees; consolidation of the material and editing was carried out by a group representing the large comprehensive committee.
In drafting this Code, permission was received from the National Lumber Manufacturers Association to reproduce certain of their drawings, and from the Plywood Manufacturers Association of British Columbia to make use of a drawing published in their Douglas Fir Plywood Technical Handbook. Both these sources are gratefully acknowledged hereby.
This Code has been prepared by the CSA Committee on Engineered Design in Timber under the jurisdiction of the Sectional Committee on Timber, and has been formally approved by these Committees and the CSA Technical Council.
Scope
1.1.1
This Code provides design criteria for structurally graded lumber, lumber not structurally graded, glued-laminated timber, plywood, piling, pole construction, and major fastenings. The requirements of this Section, General Design, apply equally to Sections 2 to 6 inclusive of this Code.
1.1.2
This Code is intended for use in the design or appraisal of structures or structural elements made from wood or wood products.
