Clause 12 provides a method of evaluating an existing bridge to determine whether it will carry a particular traffic load or set of traffic loads.
12.1.1 Deck Excluded Decks may be considered adequate without further evaluation provided t hey are known to be carrying traffic adequately and provided, in the case of steel grating decks, regular inspection is made for the onset of failure by fatigue.
12.1.2 Loads Other Than Traffic Clause 12 does not address loads caused by collision, fire, flood, ice, or ship impact. Nor does it address loss of capacity cau sed by attack from de-icing salts, brittle fracture, corrosion, fatigue, or scour.
Clause 12 shall not be used unless the bridge is secure against cau ses of failure other than traffic loading. Loads other than traffic shall be considered in accordance with Clauses 1 to 11 and 12.3 of this Standard.
12.1.3 Future Growth of Traffic No allowance is made in this Clause for future growth of traffic or for future deterioration of the bridge. If any change to the traffic or the condition of the bridge should occur, the evaluation shall be reviewed and if necessary the bridge shall be re-evaluated.
