Scope

1.1.1 
This Particular Standard specifies requirements for the safety of remote-controlled automatically-driven EQUIPMENT for gamma-ray therapy of human subjects using AFTERLOADING.

This Particular Standard applies to EQUIPMENT installed and used in accordance with the Rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.

The requirements of this Particular Standard are in addition to those of CSA Standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 601.1 and its supplement C22.2 No. 601.1S1, hereinafter referred to as the General Standard. For the purposes of testing and approving EQUIPMENT covered within the scope of this Particular Standard, the EQUIPMENT must meet the combined requirements, as applicable, of both this Particular Standard and the General Standard.

1.1.2 
This Standard specifies requirements for AFTERLOADING EQUIPMENT

• which contains and uses only gamma-ray SEALED RADIOACTIVE SOURCES,
• which automatically drives the gamma-ray SEALED RADIOACTIVE SOURCE(S) from a STORAGE CONTAINER to a treatment position inside the SOURCE APPLICATOR(S),
• which is designed for connection to a PATIENT, and
• with which movements of the RADIOACTIVE SOURCE(S) are carried out automatically by the EQUIPMENT according to a prescribed programme using a powered mechanism whose changes are controlled by the CONTROLLING TIMER(S) and TIMING DEVICES that are either programmable electronic systems (computer or microprocessors) or non-programmable systems (see also note to Sub-clause 3.2).

This Standard is not intended to apply to EQUIPMENT with neutron RADIOACTIVE SOURCES.

1.1.3 
This Standard specifies requirements for EQUIPMENT which gives AIR KERMA RATES up to 500 mGy per hour at 1 m from the RADIOACTIVE SOURCES in use. For EQUIPMENT operating outside this range, special precautions may be necessary.

1.1.4 
This Standard specifies requirements for EQUIPMENT intended to be

• used under the supervision of QUALIFIED PERSONS,
• maintained at predetermined intervals,
• subject to regular checks by the USER, and
• used for particular specified clinical purposes, e.g. INTRACAVITARY, INTERSTITIAL or SUPERFICIAL RADIOTHERAPY.

This Standard does not specify requirements for gamma-ray SEALED RADIOACTIVE SOURCES used with the EQUIPMENT. Such requirements are specified in other standards (see Sub-clause 6.8.3).

1.1.5 
The requirements of this Standard are based on the assumption that:

• an IRRADIATION TREATMENT PRESCRIPTION is available that prescribes appropriate values of the TREATMENT PARAMETERS, and
• the AIR KERMA RATES at 1 m from the RADIOACTIVE SOURCES in the EQUIPMENT are known.

This Standard includes requirements intended to ensure that the prescribed values of the TREATMENT PARAMETERS can be achieved by the EQUIPMENT, in particular that:

• the selected RADIOACTIVE SOURCE(S) is (are) positioned or moved within the SOURCE APPLICATOR in the selected configuration relative to the SOURCE APPLICATOR;
• GAMMA IRRADIATION is delivered from the selected RADIOACTIVE SOURCE configuration for the selected duration;
• GAMMA IRRADIATION is delivered by the EQUIPMENT without causing unnecessary risk to the OPERATOR or other persons in the immediate surroundings.

Canadian Deviations and Editorial Changes are included in this Standard. /

1.1.1 
La présente Norme Particulière spécifie les prescriptions de sécurité applicables aux APPAREILS projecteurs automatiques télécommandés utilisés pour la thérapie par rayons gamma sur des sujets humains par la méthode de PROJECTION DE SOURCES.

La présente Norme particulière vise les APPAREILS installés et utilisés conformément au Code canadien de l'électricité, Première partie.

Les exigences énoncées dans cette Norme particulière complètent la norme CAN/CSA-C22.2 no 601.1 (y compris le Supplément C22.2 no 601.1S1), ci-après appelée Norme générale. Aux fins de mise à l'essai et d'approbation des APPAREILS visés par cette Norme particulière, ces derniers doivent être conformes aux exigences pertinentes combinées de cette Norme particulière et de la Norme g énérale.

1.1.2 
La présente Norme spécifie les prescriptions applicables aux APPAREILS DE PROJECTION DE SOURCES

• contenant et utilisant exclusivement des SOURCES RADIOACTIVES SCELLÉES à rayons gamma,
• transférant automatiquement les SOURCES RADIOACTIVES SCELLÉES à rayons gamma du RÉCIPIENT DE STOCKAGE à une position de traitement à l'intérieur des APPLICATEURS DE SOURCES,
• conçus en vue d'être reliés à un PATIENT, et
• dans lesquels les SOURCES RADIOACTIVES sont mises en mouvement automatiquement par l'APPAREIL suivant un programme prescrit au moyen d'un mécanisme dont les actions sont commandées par les MINUTERIES et des INTÉGRATEURS DE TEMPS qui peuvent être des systèmes électroniques programmables (ordinateurs ou microprocesseurs) ou des systèmes non programmables (voir note au paragraphe 3.2).

La présente Norme ne concerne pas les APPAREILS associés à SOURCES RADIOACTIVES neutroniques.

1.1.3 
La présente Norme spécifie les prescriptions applicables aux APPAREILS donnant un DÉBIT DE KERMA DANS L'AIR allant jusqu'à 500 mGy/heure à 1 m des SOURCES RADIOACTIVES utilisées. Dans le cas d'un APPAREIL fonctionnant en dehors de cette gamme, il peut être nécessaire d'observer certaines précautions.

1.1.4 
La présente Norme spécifie les prescriptions applicables aux APPAREILS destinés

• à être utilisés sous la responsabilité de PERSONNES QUALIFIÉES,
• à être soumis à une maintenance périodique à intervalles prédéterminés,
• à être vérifiés périodiquement par l'UTILISATEUR, et
• à être utilisés pour des applications cliniques bien définies, telles que RADIOTHÉRAPIE INTRACAVITAIRE, INTRATISSULAIRE ou SUPERFICIELLE.

La présente Norme ne contient pas de prescriptions applicables aux SOURCES RADIOACTIVES SCELLÉES à rayons gamma utilisées avec l'APPAREIL. Ces prescriptions sont contenues dans d'autres normes (voir paragraphe 6.8.3).

1.1.5 
Les prescriptions de la présente Norme reposent sur les hypothèses suivantes:

• il existe une PRESCRIPTION DE TRAITEMENT PAR IRRADIATION indiquant les valeurs appropriées des PARAMÈTRES DE TRAITEMENT,
• les DÉBITS DE KERMA DANS L'AIR à 1 m de distance des SOURCES RADIOACTIVES dans l'APPAREIL sont connus.

La présente Norme contient des prescriptions destinées à s'assurer que les valeurs prescrites des PARAMÈTRES DE TRAITEMENT peuvent être obtenues par l'APPAREIL et en particulier que:

• la (les) SOURCE(S) RADIOACTIVE(S) sélectionnée(s) est (sont) positionnée(s) ou mise(s) en mouvement à l'intérieur des APPLICA TEURS DE SOURCE dans la configuration choisie par rapport à l'APPLICATEUR DE SOURCE;
• l'IRRADIATION GAMMA est délivrée au moyen de la configuration choisie des SOURCES RADIOACTIVES pendant le temps sélectionné;
• l'IRRADIATION GAMMA est délivrée au moyen de l'APPAREIL sans risque inutile pour l'OPÉRATEUR ou les autres personnes se trouvant dans le voisinage immédiat.
