Purpose
1.1
The purpose of this Standard is to establish a uniform and repeatable procedure or standard method for measuring specified product characteristics of refrigerators and freezers, and to establish certain minimum requirements in support of a consumer informative labeling program. The standard methods and the recommended levels of performance, where they appear, are intended to provide a means by which different brands and models of refrigerators and freezers may be compared and evaluated with respect to characteristics of significance in the design and use of these products.
1.2
This Standard is not intended to preclude the exercise of ingenuity in the design or improvement of refrigerators and freezers.
Scope
2.1
This Standard applies to refrigerators, combination refrigerator-freezers, and freezers, as defined in Clause 3, that are electrically operated on a 60 Hz alternating current, with a nominal supply voltage of 115 V.
2.2
This Standard covers definitions, methods for computing volumes and shelf areas, methods for determining volumes of special features, performance test procedures, methods for determining energy consumption with associated energy factors, and specifies maximum energy consumption limits.
2.3
The requirements in this Standard are not applicable to electrically operated refrigerators employing an absorption refrigeration system.
2.4
The energy consumption limits in this Standard apply only to refrigerators and combination refrigerator-freezers with a capacity up to 1100 L (39 ft³), and to freezers with a capacity up to 850 L (30 ft³).
