Masonry Design for Buildings
Product Details
Preface
This is the second edition of CSA Standard CAN3-S304-M, Masonry Design for Buildings, and it supersedes the first edition published in 1978.
This Standard has been modified as follows:
(a) all construction clauses have been transferred to CSA Standard CAN3-A371-M, Masonry Construction for Buildings, as requested by the masonry construction industry, to clarify the allocation of responsibility for design and construction requirements between the designer and the contractor;
(b) all connector clauses have been transferred to CSA Standard CAN3-A370-M, Connectors for Masonry, as part of an ongoing CSA policy to partition the Standards into a matrix of specialized inter-referenced documents that will facilitate the continual modernization process and reduce redundancy;
(c) two new design methods have been included in Clause 5, and other changes have been made throughout the Standard.
The load deflection methodin Clause 5 is based on the work of a task group on limit states design of masonry. The Committee was not quite ready to write a full limite states design Standard, but was of the opinion that a working stress version was feasible and valid and should, therefore, not be withheld for two or three years until the limit states standard was ready.
This working stress version is necessarily more conservative than the forthcoming limit states standard will be, but it is hoped that it will give designers some insight into the method, promote dialogue, and ease the transition between the standards.
This Standard was prepared by the Technical Committee on Masonry Design for Buildings under the Standards Steering Committee on Structures (Design), and was formally approved by these Committees, This Standard has been approved as a National Standard by the Standards Council of Canada.
Scope
1.1 General
This Standard provides requirements for the design of building structures of plain and reinforced masonry in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada.
Note: Requirements for masonry construction and masonry connectors are provided in CSA Standards CAN3-A371-M and CAN3-A370-M, respectively. Both Standards include requirements that affect the design.
